This year, as in every year for over a millennia, Madrid celebrates the feast day of her patroness the Virgin of Almudena (Virgen de la Almudena) on the 9th November.
Let’s get together and explore this Lady’s dwellings, and appreciate some local art and culture. The Cathedral of Almudena leaves no one indifferent. Its mixture of architectural styles, its spectacular views of Madrid from its dome or the beauty of its surroundings next to Palacio Real make it one of the most famous cathedrals.
Come join us and visit the interior of the cathedral, the Chapterhouse and the Sacristy, both decorated with original mosaics by the Slovene priest Fr. Marko Rupnik.
We then proceed to the museum gallery dedicated to the history of the Church in Madrid and its two patron saints: Santa María la Real de la Almudena and Saint Isidro Labrador.
After climbing the stairs we reach the highest point of the tour, from where you can enjoy magnificent views of the capital city from the dome. We will then go round the corner to the Crypt which is neo-Romanesque with Byzantine influences. You will be amazed by its more than 500 columns, Fancy some local festive gastronomy? Let’s stroll over to El Riojano. a dainty nineteenth century bakery and try la corona de la Almudena, a pastry in honour of the Virgen of Almudena.
