Cerralbo Museum, one of the most important Museums in Madrid also one of its least well-known.
Located in what used to be the PALACE of the 17th Marquis of Cerralbo, related to the Alba ,Osuna and Medinaceli families. He balanced his dedication to politics and history with a special sensitivity towards the fine arts. Visitors to the museum are transported back in time to experience what life was like for an aristocratic family in late 19th century Madrid. Construction started in 1883 and completed in 1893.
The classical style Palace, decorated with Neo-Baroque and Rococo elements, was designed with a dual purpose, as a residence and museum. His family trips in Spain and in Europe provided him with the oportunity to visit places and acquire artworks to display in his house. Therefore, the museum is made up of over 50,000 objects, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, glass, tapestry, furniture, coins, medals, drawings, stamps, clocks, weapons, armour, and archaeological objects from over the world.. The Marquis of Cerralbo donated this property to the nation, setting up the Cerralbo Museum, so that his collections would live on “together and can be used for study by science and art lovers”.
