San Isidro 2022 400th Anniversary

May 11 @11:00 am - 1:00 pm

May 11 @ 11:00 am 1:00 pm

Every year on and around 15th May, Madrid honours its Patron Saint, San Isidro Labrador. This year is 400th Anniversary of the Canonisation. Over one hundred miracles have been attributed to Isidore the Labourer, who was born and rests in Madrid. He was believed to have a special ability for finding water.

We will visit San Isidro’s historical places before Madrid starts cerebrating San Isidro’s Day.

1. “Colegiata de San Isidro el Real” (Royal San Isidro Church) – This Baroque church was established in 1620 and Madrid’s main cathedral until the Almudena became the official cathedral. Its high altar contains the tomb of San Isidro, the Patron Saint of the city.

2. “Capilla de San Isidro en la Iglesia de San Andrés” (Chapel of San Isidro in the Church of San Andrés) – It was built where San Isidro and his wife, Santa María de la Cabeza lived. San Isidro’s body was kept in the church until 1518. They later placed him in the Bishop’s Chapel next door to San Andrés church.

3. “Museo de San Isidro – Los Orígenes de Madrid” (Museum of San Isidro – The Origins of Madrid) – This museum next to San Andrés church offers a journey through the history of the city of Madrid from prehistoric times to the establishment of the Court, through various rooms such as the San Isidro Hall, the Renaissance Courtyard, the Archaeological-Botanical Garden or the Storeroom. You will see the remains of the original building: a 16th century Renaissance courtyard, the 17th century chapel and the so-called Miracle Well, in which it is said that the Madrid saint saved his son from drowning.

Please join and experience San Isidro’s history together and be ready for the Madrid’s cerebration. We hope to see you there!
