One thing not a lot of people know about me, is that I’m addicted to pizza. Only good pizza mind you. Ever since I lived in Florence in my 20’s I need a crispy 00 dough fix on a weekly basis. Everyone has their own idea of their “ideal” pizza but I’m rather a purist when it comes to my crispy round friends. You can generally tell how authentic a pizza is going to be just by the type of toppings on offer and I’ll happily peruse the menu, just out of curiosity, but when it’s time to order I never stray from a Margherita with rocket on top…. As in the green leafy variety not the space machine. Why confuse my veteran taste buds with the addition of peperoni, mushrooms (unless they’re porcini in which case no tomato base) and even aubergines with honey as I was offered this afternoon? How on earth am I going to savour the flavour of mature tomato sauce lightly smeared over a crispy crust with mozzarella stretched like a gymnast over the top when it’s competing on my tongue with the likes of plastic ham and tinned pineapple?? As with all rules….they can be bent. At López and López in Lavapiés they re-wrote them completely and I’ve happily crunched my way through quite a few of their artisanal creations such as fresh anchovy pizza, black pudding pizza (morcilla) and the most divine of all ….grilled vegetable topping – all of which just sung off the crispy base. Thank goodness my youngest is only 4 and can’t manage a whole one by herself ….yet. Although she’s already showing some signs that Mummy’s self-confessed addiction is hereditary.
